Fandom: The Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus books.
Name: Nico di Angelo
Canon Point: Post House of Hades, after Percy and Annabeth return.
History: Wikia information!

Personality:

Nico is essentially a goth, maybe the ultimate goth. He spends more time with the dead than the living, hangs around in cemetaries sometimes, and dresses all in black. Then again, his father is Hades, the Greek god of the dead and the underworld, so he does have a good reason. And he takes after his father in a lot of ways.

It's said a couple of times that children of Hades rarely lead happy lives, and Nico's pretty much a poster child for that. His mother died when he was young, his father was never around, and until he was ten or so the only family he knew was his older sister, Bianca, who later decided to join the Hunters of Artemis, away from Nico. He took it as a huge rejection, although he did ask Percy to keep his sister safe when she left on quest. Then Bianca died, leaving Nico alone. He's since met with his father, and indeed seems to get on with him to some degree, although his stepmother Persephone is an entirely different matter. He doesn't seem to have had any serious friendships since the Lotus Hotel, either, before Percy and the others came along. And he's gay, from a time when it wasn't all that acceptable, and he has an unrequited crush on Percy.

Perhaps because family is so scarce, he tends to be almost ridiculous levels of loyal to the family he does have. He tried to resurrect his sister for months after her death, and only stopped because she said she didn't want resurrecting. He even lied to Percy and misled him in return for information about Bianca. He brought his half-sister Hazel back from the dead, because he felt she deserved a new chance at life; she's one of the few people Nico seems to actually be comfortable with, and one of the few people he lets touch him. And he's very much both angry and upset initially at his father's absence and lack of contact; later he becomes instead desperate for his father's approval, and now they seem to have settled into some kind of relationship. It's not a very close or affectionate relationship, although Hades is proud of his son and Nico knows he has responsibilites to his father.

Possibly because he's not used to people, he's been very quick to trust people, sometimes the wrong people. He listened to Minos long after it should have been obvious the former Ghost King had ulterior motives. He also trusted Percy very quickly initially, although Percy's failure to prevent Bianca's death left Nico feeling angry and betrayed. He's occasionally impulsive, and

Every demi-god has a fatal flaw, a potentially negative personality aspect that will cause them to do the wrong thing, and for children of Hades it's always holding grudges. Nico's no exception to that rule. Even though he might be in love with Percy, Nico was angry at him for at least a year over failing to keep Bianca alive.

People tend to use the words "grim" and "creepy" to describe Nico a lot, and although much of that is probably due to Nico's general manner of dressing and looking, some of it is also down to the fact Nico's actually fairly quiet most of the time. He tends to keep a lot to himself, and finds it hard to approach people. He's also very responsible, like his father. It's Nico that watches over the memoryless Titan, Bob, and visits him regularly. He learns to control his powers mostly on his own, and at one point takes on the title King of Ghosts to save Annabeth and Rachel from Minos.

Nico is a loner, not necessarily through his own choice. Partly it's because he's convinced himself that no-one will want to hang out with the Hades kid, and partly it's because due to his losses (and his very unrequited crush) he'd rather be lonely than get close and lose anyone else. And part of it is because Nico's from another age; he was born in the 1920s, and then spent 70 years essentially in suspended time. He doesn't actually feel like he fits in anywhere in the modern age, which os one of the reasons he gets on so well with his half-sister Hazel who also is lost in time.

Nico's essentially an honest kid, but his quietness and his sense of responsibility mean he can keep a lot of secrets, sometimes without meaning to. He's known there are two camps of demigods for over a year at the time both camps find out, but kept it a secret because his dad said it was important. And he's kept his unrequited crush on Percy a secret for years, at this point in time, partly through fear or being rejected if anyone finds out. He's very bad at keeping the fact he has secrets secret, though, particularly around the people closest to him; he's usually fairly obviously uncomfortable when the topic of conversation gets close to anything he's trying to keep hidden.

Nico can also be very stubborn, sometimes obsessive; this ties in to both his flaw of keeping grudges, and can also be seen in his search for his sister and his extended crush on Percy.

He's recently spent time in his world's version of Tartarus, a monster-filled pit made from the body of the god Tartarus; it's made him a little fragile, in unexpected ways. Although he tries to act the same as he used to, he very nearly went mad at the time and is still recovering. He's frailer and sadder than he used to be, which was merely melancholy and serious.

Skills | Powers:

As a child of Hades, Nico has a number of powers related to the dead, and a few other powers besides.

He can, to some limited degree, control the dead - mindless undead he can usually control utterly, although anything with willpower is both harder and more tiring. He can silence them, send them to "sleep", or in the case of the mindless undead utterly control them. He can summon skeletons and zombies in battle. Sometimes, if he's angry enough, he can destroy or banish the undead. And in even a worse case situation, he can give off a silent warning to the dead to leave him alone. As he's taken on the title King of Ghosts, he can also control ghosts.

Nico can also sense death; in his immediate vicinity he can see life auras, and can tell if someone is dead or dying. People he knows, he can sense their deaths from further away, although it's more an audio warning in that case.

He can radiate an aura of intense fear and death, sometimes accidentally if he's nervous enough.

He has some level of control over the earth; he can summon, shape and levitate rocks from the earth around him, create chasms and fissures, cause tremors and shakes, and summon the black stone walls of his father's domain, although he probably won't actually have access to that last ability in Tartarus

He can also control shadows and darkness around him, although he can't create them. He can do a number of tricks, however, such as making them solid for attacks, thickening them to hide in, and dissipate them if other people are using them to hide in or attack with. He can travel through them as well; it's not instantaneous, but it is pretty quick. His maximum range seems to be about 300 miles at this point in time.

As a standard demigod ability, Nico is an analytical fighter,

Nico is also able to speak Italian, English and Ancient Greek.
